THE COMMAND & CONQUER MUSIC THEMES by Maarten 'Nyerguds' Meuris http://cnc2sw.planetcnc.gamespy.com A. General information: ====================== This is a list of the music themes from the Command & Conquer game. If you are writing your own C&C scenario's, you could use these themes. In the INI file, there is a section called [BASIC], where you can use the "Theme" line: "Theme=TARGET" means that your mission will start with the "Mechanical Man" theme. You can also put "Theme=Mechanical Man" there. B. Extra themes: =============== There are a total of 14 extra themes in Command & Conquer. However, only 6 of those can be used by the game. There are two reasons for this: -Normal themes are .AUD files. any of the extra themes have .VAR extensions (Most of the files with a .VAR extension are remixes of existing themes) -Command & Conquer can only play files that are listed inside the program (game.dat or C&C95.exe). Any other themes can't be played. In the list below, I have put '!' before the extra themes that CAN be played, and 'x' before the themes that can't be played. Note that even though you can set missions to play one of the 6 '!' themes, none of those will appear in the C&C playlist. C. Using themes: =============== You can't put .VAR behind the filename in the INI file to play the remixes. I tried it out. You better don't use a theme when you have an "Action" intro video in your mission: this video won't play fluently anymore because the CD player has to read a video and a theme at the same time. For Covert Operations missions, who never have briefing videos, you can't add a theme without having this problem: Covert Ops. only have "Action" videos. (When a Covert Operations mission doesn't have an "Action" video, you won't get a "VIDEO" button in the Restate window.) D. Extracting/replacing themes: ============================== If you are planning to extract themes with mixman, call them "XXX.AUD" where XXX is one of the names of the themes. (see below). It's easy to recognise .AUD files with mixman: when you open a file that starts with "V (bytes 22 56), it's an audio file. Like this, you can replace some of the themes you can play by the new themes, allowing you to hear them in the normal way. You will see a wrong title and length, but that doesn't matter, does it? If it does matter, extract the last file in LOCAL.MIX as "CONQUER.ENG". Then, run CCNAMES.EXE (a tool that comes with Mixman 3.5) and you can edit the names of all the themes, structures, units, etc... Cool, isn't it? Note that the length of the theme is not included in the "CONQUER.ENG" file: you can't change that. Note: All audio files are in the .AUD format, also the other sounds in C&C like speech, Ion Cannon, weapon sounds and the ticking of your money. The remixes have a file name that end on .VAR instead of .AUD, but to play them, you still need to extract them as .AUD. D. The themes list: ================== For some themes, certain symbols are added before the title. This is what they mean: ! : extra themes that can be played X : extra themes that can't be played The themes ending on "226M" are the Covert Operations themes. You can only find them in the SCORES.MIX from the Covert Operations CD. This includes the extra theme "80MX226M". The lengths of the themes in the "length" column are calculated or copied from the "sound options" menu in C&C. The sizes of the new themes (with ! or x) are all calculated. -To calculate the length of a theme in seconds, divide the file size value from the "size" column by 11000. This method is not 100% correct, but it does give you some information: The maximum difference I had between a calculated length and a length I copied from C&C was only two seconds. Note that this method is not reliable for small AUD files. -The first two themes are from TRANSIT.MIX, the others are from the SCORES.MIX from the Covert Operations CD. All themes exept of those ending on "226M" can also be found on the other CD's. other themes are available on all CD's. -The order is the same as in the MIX-file I got them from.
