1.0 Pull Out The Toolchest To Get Red alert To Work on later OS.

1.1 EndItAll v2

about: With Windows 2000, it sure is a b!*ch if you get a 'Restricted Access' error when you are the Administrator for the computer. What this program does, it force closes every application not needed to run the Operating System. Quite nice because there is something running on your computer that won't let Red alert install correctly. You can pick this up here.

1.2 Red alert Manager v0.98

about: This little tool is something that all Windows XP users should and will appreciate. This program was created after combating the issue of multiplayer and single player. As most of you have already found out, Red alert won't initially run on Windows XP. A lucky set of you figured out that you needed to download a DLL to get Red alert, and even a smaller bunch are really reading this. Download this tool here. A MUST DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS XP USERS! SAVES HEADACHES

1.3 Redalert.ini

This file is located in your Red alert installed directory. What it does, it tells Red alert what kind of video software and audio software to use when you run the game. Pick this file up if you can launch the game but you have no video and/or no sound.

1.4 RA No-CD Crack

This little file will make it possible to play Red alert without a CD. This will give you faster loading, and will save your CD. You still need to own the original CDs, OR have main.mix in your Red alert directory to make it work.

1.5 RA Registry Files

Download this if you get a registry or serial error.

1.6 ApCompat.exe

If you have Windows 2000, get out your installation cd and find the ApCompat file on there because it is needed to switch compatibility mode to Install Red alert. So, as I sort of mentioned in the sentence before, it is needed to switch compatibility mode on various .exe's for Red alert to run properly.

1.6 1.7 Red alert XP/2k Patch

If you have Windows 2k or XP, the first thing you should probably do, if you're having trouble getting your game to work, is to download this file, and place it in your RA directory. THIPX32.dll

2.0 I am Running the OS Windows XP

2.1 Does Red alert work on Windows XP?

Yes, for God's sake, yes it does! Please understand this little bit, YES!!!!

2.2 How do I Install Red alert on Windows XP?

Insert your cd to the comp. and open up My Computer. Then right click on your cd-rom drive and click on open. Then you can right click on setup and go to properties. After that there is a tab that says compatibility and Check the box that says, "Run this in compatibility mode for:" and a drop box appears, click windows 95 and install. This works for all programs that are 95 based. Once installed, download the 1.08 and install the patch. After that, go to your installed directory and right click on ra95.exe and click properties. Once, set the compatibility mode to Windows 95 or Windows 98. Rename THIPX32.dll to THIPX32.bak . Next download the Red alert XP Patch and install it to your Red alert Installed folder.

2.3 How do I Play a LAN game?

Download the 3.03 patch and install the patch in your Red alert installed directory. If you installed the Red alert XP Patch, rename THIPX32.dll to THIPX32.old . Next, rename THIPX32.bak to THIPX32.dll . Afterwards, Go to your Network Places and click on your LAN connection.
Click on Properties and add the IPX protocol. Set the frame type to ethernet 802.2. Set the first computer's network numbers (internal and the 802.2 one) to 100000000. Do the same for the other computers on the LAN who want to play but set the network numbers to 100000000 on one, and then 20000000 on the next, then 30000000 one the next and so on... (i think this will work, but i've only played with three comps)

**If the method described doesn't work**

1: Internal network number under IPX setting is 00000000 on ALL PC's

2: Frametype is Ethernet II (this is stated on an old C&C forum by an employee of Westwood) on all pc's

3: Network number should also be the same on all pc's, in our case 22222222 worked perfectly

4: This one I did not read in your guide, but it solved allot of problems for us: In your RA folder, open rasetup.exe and enter 00.00.00.00 in the Destination address. socket number can remain empty. IPX traffic now knows where to 'go' to!

With these settings we can connect and host/join a game perfectly.

2.4 How do I Play a Multiplayer game?

If you have broadband, I suggest follow the instructions on 2.3 . Then launch WW-Chat and look for players. If WW-Chat doesn't work, download Gamespy Arcade and play that way.

3.0 I am Running the OS Windows 2000

3.1 Does Red alert work on Windows 2000?

Refer to my answer under 2.1, but if you are lazy and don't want to read it,
Yes.

3.2 How do I Install Red alert on Windows 2000?

Use apcompat.exe, look under tools heading if you want to know what/where this application is. You will run apcompat.exe to change the compatibility mode on Red alert. Use the same steps covered in 2.1 and 2.2 to install, play, and multiplayer options.

3.3 I receieved a Message saying "You don't have enough Access Privileges."!

DOWNLOAD ENDITALL WARNING using this program could result into system crash if not used wisely! Once installed, run the application. Find the icon on top that has 2 skulls(1 red 1 blue) and click it. If you receive any program/windows/memory errors, just click okay and continue. Click the refresh button in EndItAll 2, it looks like the refresh button in Internet Explorer. Click the two skulls again. Close the application. Run apcompat.exe and try to install it again.

4.0 I am running Linux

4.1 Does Red alert work on Linux?

Actually yes it does! Hurray for Linux! Hurray for Razor! Harray for WINE!

4.2 How do I Install Red alert on Linux?

First you will need WINE (at least version 20010510 works, available via FTP from sunsite.unc.edu). Then mount the CD as root and copy the install folder to your Wine "Windows"-directory, then rename the folder to anything you like. After that Change the modes of the files in the Red alert-directory so you can read/write (chmod +w). Start the game by typing

"wine -winver win95 /mnt/windows/westwood/redalert/ra95.exe"

in your console.

4.3 How do I Play a LAN game?

With WINE, it has the necessary connections to play a multiplayer game and a LAN game!

4.4 How do I Play a Multiplayer game?

With WINE, it has the necessary connections to play a multiplayer game and a LAN game!

6.0 Miscellaneous

6.1 How do I Add Music?

If you are trying to put music into RA, you will indeed need RA Mixer and an Audio Editing program such as Sound Recorder (comes with Windows) XCC Mixer (if you want to do it easier, although sometimes riskier for converting files), What you do is:

Make sure that the audio file is converted to .wav format. Make sure that the file in .wav format is 22050 Hz, Mono, 16-bit, PCM form. Then use the WAV2AUD.EXE that comes with the RAMixer pack (look in the directory you installed it to) to convert the wav to a .aud file.

After that is done, you need to choose a track existing in Red alert to replace with your song (as new tracks cannot be added, only replaced).
Here is a list of the songs you can use:

#'s RA Name. Song Title
---------------------------
0 BIGF226M Bigfoot
1 CRUS226M Crush
2 FAC1226M Face the Enemy 1
3 FAC2226M Face the Enemy 2
4 HELL226M Hell March
5 RUN1226M Run For Your Life
6 SMSH226M Smash
7 TREN226M Trenches
8 WORK226M Workmen
9 DENSE_R Dense
10 FOGGER1A Fogger
11 MUD1A Mud
12 RADIO2 Radio 2
13 ROLLOUT Roll Out
14 SNAKE Snake
15 TERMINAT Terminate
16 TWIN Twin
17 VERTOR1A Vector
18 MAP Map Selection theme
19 SCORE Score screen theme
20 INTRO Intro theme
21 CREDITS End Credits theme
Counterstrike only:
22 2ND_HAND 2nd_Hand
23 ARAZOID Arazoid
24 BACKSTAB Backstab
25 CHAOS2 Chaos2
26 SHUT_IT Shut_it
27 TWINMIX1 TwinMix1
28 UNDER3 Under3
29 VR2 VR2
Note that the song "AWAIT" mentioned in the rules.ini file in the [ThemeControl] section does not actually exist, and "ARAZOID" on this list does
not work either.

Now, choose the song's code on the left and name your music file that. (Ex. VR2.AUD would replace the song VR2 available in the music list [if you have Aftermath]. If you don't, I suggest using another like Hellmarch, etc.) After all this is done, put the .aud in your Red alert directory, and tada! It should play whenever you play the song in RA that you replaced. Edit the "Conquer.eng" file located in the REDalert.MIX file to change the name of the song. (use RAmixer to extract it) place the edited file in your RA directory, and voila.
---

6.2 How do I Give all of the music to both sides?

Download this file: Rules.ini, or if you already have that, then don't bother. Also note, that this will allow all of the music in the game, to be played thruout the game (as in in all the missions, and not just multiplayer.) - Additional music (Aftermath) submitted by Tropper.

Place it in your Red alert Directory, and find this:
CODE

; theme identifier is given a scenario and owner. The theme will
; become available at that scenario or later and for the specified

6.3 "Unable to Create Registry Keys"? - Uhhhh Help!?

You haven't installed RA to the default directory. Try reinstalling, but use the suggested path that CD suggests. If that fails, download these Registry Keys. Unzip, and double click on the reg file and click yes.

6.4 How can I fix a Blank Screen?

Your video card is too new and is not recognized by Red alert because of its newness:-) So if you have an ATI Radeon 9800 or a Voodoo 3 3 DFx card, it's going to make you feel special. Anyways, you are going to need a friend on this one. Copy your friend's Ra.ini located in the installed directory. Overwrite the one from your friends computer. This is also the same for sound. I do suggest to find a friend where your friend sound/picture are from the same company for this to work propery. You can try mine also.

6.5 How can I fix a Black Screen?

Please refer to 6.4 since you didn't catch my sarcasm in the beginning.

6.6 How can I fix having no sound?

Please refer to 6.5 answer. Your soundcard is too new for red alert, so it won't work unless it decides to read off an old soundcards .ini property index. Red alert.ini focuses on both sound and video.

6.7 How do I take Screen Shots?

When in the game, hit the "Print Screen" key. Close RA and open up Paint Shop Pro. (Any other graphics editor which can load pallets will do the trick.) Hit ctrl + v or right click and paste the image from the clipboard. You should get a black and purple picture. Go to Colors>Load Pallet and load the Paint shop Pro pallet for Red alert, with "Maintain Indexes" checked. Save it, and that's it!
